Native plants that grow here

Local native plants for the garden you have

Choose by your sun, soil, moisture and room, not by the label. Each plant shows its height, flowering, the wildlife it supports and its sources.

Four things that decide what grows

  • Sun and shade

Watch where the sun falls through the day: full sun, part shade or mostly shade.

  • Soil

Sandy, loamy or clay? In Brisbane, the council's suburb lookup tells you your soil type.

  • Wet or dry

See how water runs across your garden after rain, and note the spots that stay wet or dry.

  • Room to grow

Measure the space: a Native Violet stays at about 15 cm, a Brisbane Wattle can reach 6 m.

Find plants for your conditions

Plant facts come from Brisbane City Council, Queensland's WildNet and Sunshine Coast's botanic garden.

Native or local: what is the difference?

A plant can be native to Australia and still not belong here: a "native" label may mean a plant from the tropics or another state, and some natives are weeds in parts of SEQ. Local natives grow here naturally. Every plant here is checked against the state's weed lists.
